Fight Summer Frizz with Hair Oils

Summer brings a wealth of wonderful things—long nights telling stories by the bonfire, full days of boating out on the lake, outdoor family barbecues and memories that last a lifetime. But, hot, humid days can also wreak havoc on our skin and hair! For many of us, the beginning of Summer commences our battle with out-of-control frizzy hair that simply can’t be tamed. Thankfully, a new trend is dominating the hair care industry that promises to not only tame your tresses, but also heighten the health of your hair! Let’s learn why natural hair oils may be just the ticket to help you fight Summer frizz and love your locks again!

Surprisingly, the use of hair oil is nothing new! It’s cosmetic use dates back thousands of years, although the technology to extract beneficial ingredients has dramatically improved. Oil, by nature, has softening and conditioning properties. In fact, your scalp produces much of the oil many of us need to keep the full length of our hair conditioned. For some of us though, we simply need additional hydration to keep ends healthy and put a stop to frizz!

When choosing a hair oil, look for a blend that has a very concentrated blend of oils that are high in fatty triglycerides. Some of the best natural options come from vegetables, fruits and nuts. Oil should be used sparingly to avoid weighing down your hair and making it appear greasy. When used properly, hair oils can soften, strengthen and add incredible shine to your tresses!

Here are some popular ingredients found in many hair oils:

Macadamia Oil: Rich, fatty acids help to add shine, strengthen, and nourish your hair follicles. This, in turn, helps combat hair loss and brittle strands. Macadamia oil is fantastic for calming frizz, tangles, and dullness.

Argan Oil: This protective oil is wonderful for smoothing hair and increasing its softness. It can also help protect the hair shaft from the damage caused from heat styling.

Olive Oil: A truly restorative oil for super dry hair. Olive oil can help strengthen elasticity and shine, but may be too heavy for fine, thin hair.

Sweet Almond Oil: This oil is rich in Vitamins A, B and E. Almond Oil can help boost body and shine in thicker hair types.

Coconut Oil: If you have hair that is truly compromised and brittle, Coconut Oil can help reinforce the structure of the hair, as it penetrates deep into the shaft and can repair weakened areas.

Castor Oil: May help prevent over-shedding and breakage and encourage new hair growth. A popular oil for thinning hair and overall hair loss treatment.

Now that we know the benefits, how should you use a hair oil? It turns out, all different ways! Many oils can be massaged into the scalp to increase circulation, treat dry scalp, and loosen debris and product buildup. This should be done before bed or immediately before showering and shampooing. The use of most oils is encouraged on damp hair before styling, or as a finishing product on dry hair to seal in moisture and accentuate shine and softness. Regardless of which method you use, always start sparingly at first to avoid added weight to your hair or any “greasiness.”

When used properly, hair oils can take the place of several styling products! When used on damp hair they can boost conditioning and make your hair more resistant to breakage. When used on dry hair, they can add incredible shine, luxurious softness, and smooth out any frizz or flyaways. It’s no wonder these versatile oils are now a hair care staple for so many of us!
